13.4.1 Commitment to carbon neutral university

Srinakharinwirot University has made an explicit institutional commitment to become a carbon neutral university by 2040 under the framework “SWU Carbon Neutrality by 2040.” This commitment is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between the University and its faculties, colleges, institutes and offices, which recognises the causes and impacts of climate change and sets a clear pathway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and move toward a low-emission society. The MOU defines three main objectives: (1) to propose and implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and introduce carbon capture within the University; (2) to build SWU as a model organisation in managing the carbon footprint of all internal agencies; and (3) to develop the institution into an organisation that achieves carbon neutrality by 2040. The cooperation framework includes joint activities to support the SWU Carbon Neutrality policy, and the establishment of a greenhouse-gas emissions database covering buildings and infrastructure, power management, waste management, water management and other relevant operations. This carbon neutrality target is explicitly aligned with Thailand’s national goals of achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero GHG emissions by 2065, as announced at COP, demonstrating that SWU’s institutional commitment is both time-bound and consistent with national climate policy.
