SI 3.2 Comprehensive Mental Health Support Systems

SWU has developed a comprehensive mental health support system that combines academic guidance, disability and learning-support services, psychological counseling, crisis intervention, psychotherapy with referral pathways, and specialised student well-being programmes. These services are delivered through the Division of Student Affairs, dedicated centers, and partner hospitals/platforms to ensure that students and staff receive accessible, confidential, and holistic mental-health support.

Academic guidance on mental health.

SWU integrates mental health considerations into its academic advisory and student support mechanisms. Academic advisors and counseling staff provide guidance to students facing academic stress, burnout, adjustment problems, and study–life imbalance. Through workshops, mental health literacy activities, and advisory sessions, students are supported to recognise emotional warning signs, develop coping strategies, and maintain mental well-being alongside their academic responsibilities.

Academic service for disability, dyslexia, and other specific learning difficulties.

The SWU Disability Support Services Center (DSS Center) provides academic services for students with disabilities, dyslexia, and specific learning difficulties. The Center offers accessible learning materials, assistive technologies (such as screen readers, Braille tools, and ZoomText), support with examinations and coursework, and coordination with lecturers to provide reasonable accommodations. These services ensure that students with diverse learning needs can fully participate in academic life and achieve their educational goals on an equal basis with others.

Counseling for life difficulties

Through the DSS Center and student counseling services, SWU offers support for students encountering personal and life difficulties, including family problems, relationship issues, financial stress, homesickness, and general emotional distress. Trained staff and counseling psychologists provide one-on-one guidance focused on problem-solving, emotional regulation, and life planning. When necessary, students are referred to specialised mental health services, ensuring that those facing significant life challenges receive timely and appropriate support.

Psychological counseling, including crisis support, personal violence response and prevention, and suicide response and prevention

SWU provides psychological counseling services that cover everyday mental-health concerns as well as crisis situations. Counseling centers such as the W.E.L.L Center, Humannice Counseling Center, the Feel Good Room, and faculty-based counseling units offer free, confidential psychological counseling for students and staff. These services address stress, anxiety, depression, interpersonal conflict, and trauma, and include structured protocols for crisis intervention, personal violence response and prevention, and suicide risk assessment and management. When high-risk cases are identified, there are clear procedures for immediate support and referral to specialised care.

Provision of psychiatric psychotherapy, including a referral system.

SWU ensures access to psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care through on-campus clinics and external partners. Students and staff can receive mental health assessments, psychotherapy, and, where appropriate, psychiatric treatment. Cases requiring more intensive or specialised care are referred through formal pathways to partner hospitals and tele-mental-health platforms, enabling continuity between initial counseling, psychotherapy, and medical management. This referral system ensures that individuals with moderate to severe mental health conditions receive comprehensive and sustained support.

Any other specialized mental health services implemented (please specify).

SWU operates “SWU Smile”, a specialised mental health service under the Division of Student Affairs. SWU Smile provides professional psychological counseling via in-person, online, and telephone channels, as well as mental health screening, crisis-response procedures, and follow-up care. The service runs a mental health surveillance system, trains peer supporters, and coordinates with faculty and staff through a university counseling network. These specialised services strengthen early detection, reduce stigma, and provide a structured support system for students’ mental well-being across both campuses.
