HP 6.2 Comprehensive Safer Sex Programs

Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) has implemented a comprehensive package of safer sex programs that combines counseling, surveillance, campaigns, and access to commodities for students and staff across its campuses. These activities are coordinated mainly through student health and wellbeing units, in collaboration with academic and student organizations, and are designed to reduce sexual risk behaviors, prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy, and promote responsible, informed sexual decision-making. 1. Availability of counseling programs focused on safer sex behaviors
SWU provides confidential counseling services on sexual health and safer sex behaviors through its student support and health-promotion system. Trained staff and professionals offer one-to-one and small-group counseling on topics such as contraceptive options, correct condom use, STI/HIV prevention, relationship safety, and negotiating consent. Counseling is available to both students and personnel, with referral pathways to external health services when necessary. Program information and examples of counseling activities are documented on the university’s health promotion and rankings websites (HP 6.2 page). (SWU Rankings)

2. Surveillance program to monitor and address sexual risk behaviors
The university also operates a surveillance approach to monitor sexual risk behaviors, using periodic surveys and health-risk screening among students, as well as data from counseling and outreach activities. This information is used to identify patterns of high-risk behavior (e.g., inconsistent condom use, multiple partners, low STI testing rates) and to tailor targeted interventions and campaigns. The SPANISIT SWU social-media posts (X/Twitter) are used as part of risk-communication and feedback channels, reporting ongoing activities and raising awareness about sexual health and safer sex practices among students.

3. Campaigns aimed at preventing sexual risk behaviors among students and staff
SWU regularly conducts campus-wide campaigns on safer sex and sexual-health risk prevention, often aligned with key dates such as World AIDS Day, Valentine’s Day, or national sexual-health initiatives. These campaigns include information booths, talks, game-based learning, social-media content (via SPANISIT SWU and related student groups), and collaboration with external partners. The activities emphasise condom use, mutual consent, STI testing, and reducing stigma against people living with HIV or diverse sexual orientations. Evidence of these campaigns and student engagement is shown in SPANISIT SWU campaign posts on X/Twitter.

4. Availability of safer sex commodities within the university
To support behavior change in practice, SWU ensures availability of safer sex commodities on campus, including free or easily accessible condoms and educational leaflets. Distribution points are set up at student events and health-promotion activities, and are promoted through SPANISIT SWU’s social-media channels. Campaign posts show condom-distribution activities together with brief educational messages, enabling students to immediately access both materials (condoms) and information (leaflets, QR codes, online resources) in the same setting.

5. Other innovative measures to promote safer sex
Beyond standard services, SWU uses innovative measures to engage students in safer-sex promotion, such as:

  • Integrating safer-sex messages into peer-led activities and student club events.

  • Using social-media campaigns (SPANISIT SWU and related channels) to normalize discussion about condoms, STI prevention, and consent among young people.

  • Combining on-site events with online resources, where QR codes link students to anonymous information pages, hotlines, or counseling contact points.

Together, these components demonstrate that SWU has implemented four or more safer-sex initiatives in line with HP 6.2, with clear evidence of counseling, surveillance, preventive campaigns, commodity provision, and innovative student-centered engagement to promote safer sex across the university community.
