9.2.1 Number of patents citing research

Srinakharinwirot University’s research is increasingly being taken up in patentable technologies, as evidenced by the growth in patents citing SWU research in the latest THE Ranking Tracker data. For the publication window used in THE WUR 2025 (2019–2023), there were 327 patents worldwide that cited SWU scholarly outputs; in the more recent tracker window (2020–2024) this increased to 332 patents, indicating a continued expansion of the university’s contribution to technology development and innovation ecosystems. Over the same period, the number of SWU scholarly outputs cited by patents rose from 164 to 174 publications, showing that a broader set of the university’s articles is now being used as prior art or foundational knowledge in new inventions. Together, these trends demonstrate that SWU research is not only academically visible but is also feeding into real-world innovation, aligning strongly with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and the THE Impact indicator on “Number of patents citing university research.”
