7.2.1 Energy-efficient renovation and building
Energy-Efficient Renovation and Building Policy
Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) has established a policy on Carbon Neutrality (Carbon Neutral – Scope 1) by 2050 and the achievement of Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2065 under the “SWU Zero Carbon” initiative, together with the “SWU Zero Waste” policy. The policy outlines the following commitments:
Reduce energy consumption within the university by decreasing electricity and tap water usage by 5% each year, and promote the replacement of lighting with LED bulbs as well as the replacement of air conditioners with energy-saving (Label No. 5) systems in all university areas.
The university shall plant trees and increase green spaces on campus every year in order to enhance its carbon credit.
The university shall reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5% each year.
The university shall promote the use of alternative energy sources, such as solar cells and solar floating systems, and collaborate with external agencies on energy conservation.
The university shall encourage the renovation of existing buildings and the construction of new buildings in accordance with energy-saving guidelines.
The university shall support the treatment and reuse of wastewater within the campus, for example, for watering plants.
The university shall promote waste separation within the campus and implement waste management measures to reduce the volume of all types of waste.
The university must provide knowledge on waste separation to students and staff and foster awareness of waste separation among students, personnel, faculty members, and business operators within the university.
The university shall reduce general waste within the campus by decreasing the volume of general waste by 10% each year.
This policy shall take effect from now onwards (Update: 2 December 2021).
In alignment with this policy, SWU has integrated energy-efficient and sustainable design principles into the development of The Human Resource Development Building for a Sustainable Economy, which is designed as a Smart Building, emphasizing energy efficiency and universal accessibility (Universal Design) for all users. The project is currently in the pre-construction and bidding phase in accordance with the Procurement Plan for Fiscal Year 2025 of the Potential Development Division, Office of the President, Srinakharinwirot University. The total allocated budget for the project is 950,000,000 THB (nine hundred and fifty million baht).
The new building is expected to have a height comparable to other major university buildings—such as the M.L. Pin Malakul Service Building (300 Million Building), standing 17 stories tall, and the Professor Dr. Saroch BuaSri Innovation Building (400 Million Building), at 22 stories high. The new building will be located on the Prasarnmit Campus, Bangkok.
