2.3.3 Sustainable food choices on campus

Srinakharinwirot University, through Bodhivijjalaya College, implements activities related to “Sustainably Farmed Food on Campus.”

The College has driven its academic service mission in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger – achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. In Fiscal Year 2024, the College implemented two agricultural-related projects aimed at strengthening food security, promoting the use of modern agricultural technologies, and advancing sustainable farming practices among local agricultural communities, students, and university personnel. These initiatives have served as a key foundation for enhancing the capacity of local farmers and food producers, equipping them with essential knowledge, skills, and resources to improve sustainable production, expand opportunities, and ultimately enhance quality of life in line with the SDGs.

Outcome: CCAS FARM Organic Agriculture Learning Center

The “CCAS FARM” Organic Agriculture Learning Center, established as a model farm under Bodhivijjalaya College, is a flagship initiative promoting sustainably farmed food within the University. The Center cultivates organic salad vegetables in greenhouses and produces organic rice in Sa Kaeo Province. It serves as a demonstration and knowledge transfer platform on sustainable agricultural technologies for 37 participants—including students, teachers, faculty, and staff—fostering awareness and practical application of organic and safe agriculture systems. Agricultural produce from the farm was distributed to college personnel for consumption and meal preparation to support sustainable food security, climate resilience, and long-term sustainable food production on campus.

Key learning elements and activities integrated both theoretical knowledge and practical application:

  • Awareness Building: A lecture titled “Organic Agriculture: Simple and Close to Our Everyday Life” raised awareness on the harmful effects of chemical substances, how to avoid chemical residues, and how to identify materials used in organic farming.

  • Organic Input Management: Participants learned about soil components, the application of beneficial microorganisms for plant disease control and plant growth enhancement, and participated in hands-on activities such as mixing organic planting media.
