12.4.1 Publication of a sustainability report

Srinakharinwirot University publicly discloses its sustainability and environmental performance through the Annual Report 2024 which effectively serves as an institutional sustainability report. The document presents a structured account of pollution and waste management, including campus-wide initiatives on waste segregation, reduction of plastic use, promotion of recycling and upcycling of waste materials into new products, and the cultivation of environmental awareness among staff and students. It further details measures under a “Smart Energy” framework, such as enhancing energy efficiency, introducing renewable energy solutions (for example, solar technologies) and upgrading physical infrastructure to reduce electricity consumption across university facilities. In parallel, the report describes systematic water resource management, including the replacement of main water pipes to minimise water loss and the installation of water-saving sanitary fixtures on both Prasarnmit and Ongkharak campuses. A dedicated section on “SWU Carbon Neutrality” sets out the university’s long-term commitment to managing greenhouse gas emissions and developing mechanisms related to carbon footprint and carbon credits, positioning climate action as a strategic priority. Collectively, these elements demonstrate that the Annual Report extends beyond conventional financial and academic reporting to provide an integrated, publicly accessible account of the university’s environmental, resource-efficiency and climate-related initiatives in a manner consistent with the characteristics of a formal sustainability report. Development of the University towards a Smart University Based on Sustainability (Sustainable Smart University)

Smart Environment

In managing its internal operations in an environmentally friendly manner, the University places strong emphasis on implementing activities and systems that are compatible with environmental stewardship. This has led to improvements in the physical environment and the optimal utilisation of physical resources, in line with the aspiration to become a sustainable university. These efforts are designed to respond to, support and drive the University’s mission and strategic directions in promoting the use of renewable energy and protecting the environment on campus. At the same time, the University is committed to enhancing quality of life and maintaining environmental sustainability, together with fostering environmental awareness and responsibility among students and staff, so that they may serve as role models for Thai society in building a sustainable social and environmental foundation. In this regard, the University has implemented the “Srinakharinwirot University Carbon Neutrality” initiative and organised a range of related activities as follows:

1. Pollution Management – focusing on waste management

  • Fostering awareness beginning with the separation of food waste and general waste, reducing the use of plastic bags, plastic containers and foam packaging, and encouraging the use of cloth bags, reusable water flasks and refillable bottles.

  • Applying innovation to transform waste materials into practical products that can be sold to generate income for the organisation, such as T-shirts and coasters.

2. Smart Energy, guided by the principles of lean energy use, includes the following measures:

  • Introducing solar energy to substitute for conventional electrical power.

  • In terms of water resources, the University has replaced the main water supply pipes to reduce leakage and wastage of treated tap water in the system at SWU Ongkharak. This intervention reduced water loss from 38.70% to 6.07%. In parallel, the University has conducted water conservation campaigns and replaced sanitary fixtures with water-saving models at both SWU campuses.

3. Carbon Neutrality

The University is advancing towards carbon neutrality by implementing measures related to the management of its carbon footprint and carbon credits within the institution. Srinakharinwirot University formally announced its commitment to “SWU Carbon Neutrality 2040” on Friday, 12 July 2024, signalling its intention to become a carbon-neutral university. This declaration is intended to engage the University and all its units in efforts to address greenhouse gas emissions by proposing and implementing emission-reduction measures within their respective operations. It also reinforces the University’s policy on carbon neutrality, with a shared objective of achieving the agreed carbon-neutral target by the year 2040.
