12.2.4 Policy waste disposal - landfill policy
Srinakharinwirot University addresses landfill reduction through its integrated “SWU Zero Carbon” and “SWU Zero Waste” policy framework, which combines climate targets with systematic waste management. The University sets annual reduction targets for general waste and promotes campus-wide waste separation, recycling and the reuse of treated wastewater, thereby minimising the volume of waste that ultimately goes to landfill. Operational measures include improving energy-efficient buildings, expanding green areas and working with internal units and external service providers to ensure that waste is properly segregated, collected and treated. Through these measures, the University shifts its waste stream away from disposal and towards reduction, reuse and resource recovery across both campuses.
Carbon Neutrality Policy (SWU Zero Carbon) by 2050 and Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2065, and Waste Separation within the University (SWU Zero Waste)
The University shall reduce energy consumption within its premises by decreasing electricity and tap water usage by 5% each year, and by promoting the replacement of existing lighting with LED bulbs and the replacement of air conditioners with energy-saving units (Energy Label No. 5) throughout the campus.
The University shall plant trees and expand green areas on campus every year in order to increase its carbon credit.
The University shall reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5% each year.
The University shall support the use of alternative energy sources, such as solar cells and solar floating systems, and shall cooperate with external agencies in energy conservation initiatives.
The University shall encourage the retrofitting of existing buildings and the construction of new buildings in accordance with energy-saving and energy-efficiency principles.
The University shall support wastewater treatment and the reuse of treated water within the campus, for example for watering trees and green areas.
The University shall promote waste separation within the campus and implement waste management measures to reduce the volume of all types of waste.
The University shall provide education and raise awareness on waste separation among students and staff, and foster a sense of responsibility regarding waste segregation among students, personnel, academic staff and business operators within the University.
The University shall reduce general (non-recyclable) waste within the campus by decreasing the quantity of such waste by 10% each year.
This policy shall take effect from the date of its announcement.
