Srinakharinwirot University Green University Policy

Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) is committed to developing a "Green University" by recognizing the paramount importance of environmentally friendly management, energy conservation, and the efficient administration of resources and the environment. This commitment aligns with the promotion of the Net Zero GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Emissions policy, the Carbon Neutrality policy, and the university’s participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

The "SWU Green University" policy serves as a guiding framework for university divisions, staff, and students to cultivate awareness and collaboratively implement tangible environmental initiatives under the following framework:

1. Alignment with Net Zero and Carbon Neutrality Policies: Implement operations in accordance with the Net Zero GHG Emissions and Carbon Neutrality policies by promoting environmentally friendly practices. This aims to transition SWU into a Green University and Green Office, while concurrently elevating the university's sustainable environmental management.

2. Environmental Operational Guidelines in Six Key Areas:

2.1 Setting and Infrastructure

2.1.1 Continuously promote and campaign for the expansion of green spaces within the university.

2.1.2 Encourage departments to maintain a high-quality environment, adopt eco-friendly operational practices, and transition towards becoming Green Offices.

2.1.3 Ensure that renovation and construction projects utilize environmentally friendly materials, and prioritize green procurement by engaging with environmentally conscious companies.

2.2 Energy and Climate Change

2.2.1 Encourage departments to establish measures and practical guidelines for reducing electrical energy consumption.

2.2.2 Promote the utilization of clean energy through the installation of alternative electrical energy systems.

2.2.3 Promote the development and design of university buildings to be energy-efficient and eco-friendly. This involves integrating collaboration with private sector organizations or agencies possessing environmental policies and standards to apply green knowledge, technology, and innovations across all operational phases.

2.2.4 Promote measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from university activities and mandate the organization of meetings that consider environmental preservation in accordance with the Carbon Neutrality policy (Carbon Neutral Meetings).

2.2.5 Foster capacity building, cultivate environmental consciousness, and encourage the participatory environmental management of staff and students.

2.3 Transportation

2.3.1 Promote walking, cycling, and the use of public transportation or electric shuttles within the university to mitigate traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions from the university's transportation sector.

2.3.2 Encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and low-emission vehicles by providing EV charging stations on campus. Promote shared mobility systems (carpool/vanpool) among staff and students to reduce fossil fuel consumption and enhance commuting efficiency.

2.4 Waste Management

2.4.1 Promote resource reduction initiatives, such as the use of reusable cloth bags and electronic document systems (e-documents).

2.4.2 Promote efficient waste separation and management systems, alongside raising awareness and instilling environmental consciousness among staff and students.

2.5 Water Resources

2.5.1 Promote water-use efficiency, including the procurement of water-saving equipment and the proper maintenance of plumbing systems.

2.5.2 Promote awareness and cultivate a water conservation mindset among staff, university students, and school students.

2.5.3 Ensure the proper maintenance and efficient operation of wastewater treatment systems.

2.6 Education and Research

2.6.1 Promote and integrate concepts of Green University development, Net Zero GHG Emissions, Carbon Neutrality, and sustainability into the curricula and relevant courses at all educational levels. This includes organizing extracurricular learning activities to sustainably develop students' environmental skills and consciousness.

2.6.2 Promote and support research and innovation encompassing Green University initiatives, Net Zero GHG Emissions, Carbon Neutrality, and sustainability.

3. Internal and External Stakeholder Engagement The university fosters the active participation of staff, university students, school students, and surrounding communities in the design, implementation, and evaluation of Green University activities. This is achieved through academic service projects and collaborative partnerships with local administrative organizations and the private sector.

4. Continuous Improvement The university is profoundly committed to continuously improving its Green University policies and operations. This is executed through strategic planning, establishing annual objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), implementing the plans, and promoting the participation of all sectors. The university strictly monitors and evaluates outcomes based on these KPIs, reports to the Green University Committee, and revises action plans if targets are unmet.

Comprehensive policy reviews are conducted biennially (every two years). Furthermore, committee meetings with the university executive team and respective divisions are held bi-monthly (every two months) to ensure proactive adaptation to environmental changes and emerging technologies.
