The pursuit of environmental sustainability in the modern era requires a delicate balance between enhancing agricultural productivity and mitigating the impacts of climate change. In the recent episode of "Forward-Looking Research" (Wichai Kao Klai), broadcasted on October 18, 2025, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongthep Hanpattanakit, Assistant to the President for Research and Innovation at Srinakharinwirot University, shared profound insights into a promising solution: the application of Biochar.
Biochar represents a significant breakthrough in soil science and environmental management. Rather than viewing agricultural waste as a burden, this research transforms organic matter into a stable, carbon-rich material through the process of pyrolysis. When integrated into agricultural soil, Biochar acts as a powerful soil conditioner, improving porosity, nutrient retention, and microbial activity. However, its value extends far beyond the farm's boundaries.
One of the most critical aspects of Dr. Pongthep’s research is the role of Biochar in Carbon Sequestration. By locking carbon into a stable form within the earth, we can effectively prevent it from entering the atmosphere as greenhouse gases. This dual-purpose strategy—improving local soil quality while addressing the global climate crisis—paves the way for a truly "Environmentally Friendly Agricultural Management" model. This research not only showcases academic excellence from the Faculty of Environmental Culture and Eco-Tourism but also provides a practical roadmap for achieving a sustainable, low-carbon future for the agricultural sector.
