SI 5.1 Integration of Health Promotion in Core University Curriculum

SWU integrates Health Promotion topics across core curricula in multiple academic disciplines, ensuring that students gain knowledge, skills, and competencies related to physical health, mental health, healthy living, disease prevention, nutrition, ageing, and well-being science. Across the University, 130 programmes from 22 faculties/colleges embed health-related learning outcomes and coursework as part of compulsory or core subjects.

This widespread integration reflects SWU’s commitment to developing graduates who possess holistic health literacy and the ability to apply health-promotion principles in personal, professional, and community contexts.

Examples of Core Curriculum Courses Integrating Health Promotion

1. Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

Programme: B.Sc. in Psychology

  • PG102 Introduction to Biological Psychology
    A core course introducing biological foundations of human behaviour, covering brain–body interaction, stress mechanisms, health behaviour, and well-being science.
    Area integrated: Mental health, behavioural health, stress & coping, brain–wellness relationship.

2. Faculty of Science

Programme: B.Sc. in Mathematics

  • SWU291 Healthy Lifestyle
    A foundational course on holistic lifestyle health, covering exercise, nutrition, emotional balance, chronic disease prevention, and behaviour change for long-term wellness.
    Area integrated: Healthy lifestyle, preventive health, behavioural change.

3. Faculty of Nursing

Programme: M.N.S. (Adult & Gerontological Nursing)

  • NAD532 Nursing Care of Adults and Gerontological Nursing with Critical, Acute and Chronic Illness
    A specialised core course integrating comprehensive health assessment, health-promotion planning, and evidence-based practices for adults and older persons with advanced health needs.
    Area integrated: Clinical health promotion, ageing, chronic disease management, health assessment.
