HP 5.1 Comprehensive Healthy Diet Programs

Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) has established a comprehensive healthy diet programme that combines formal policies, educational activities, on-campus food environments, and innovative initiatives to promote nutritious eating among students and staff.

1) Policy on promoting a healthy diet within the university
SWU, in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), launched the “SWU Healthy Canteen” as a health-promoting canteen model. The policy aims to create a supportive food environment by encouraging vendors to provide healthier menus (less sugar, salt, and fat) and using the canteen as a learning space for healthy eating and well-being for students, staff, and nearby communities.

2) Regular educational programs on nutritional guidelines and healthy eating
Through its SDG 2 initiatives, SWU provides ongoing educational programmes and campaigns on healthy and sustainable diets. The Healthy and Affordable Food Choices (SDG 2.3.4) framework includes nutrition labeling, healthy menu badges, posters, and canteen-based health-promotion campaigns that teach students and staff about balanced meals and healthier food choices.

3) Marketplaces ensuring availability of healthy food options
Under SDG 2.3.3 Sustainable food choices on campus, SWU ensures the availability of healthy food options within and around campus by supporting sustainably farmed produce through Bodhivijjalaya College’s activities. Organic vegetables and rice from the CCAS FARM Organic Agriculture Learning Center are produced and distributed for consumption among college staff and used to support sustainable food security and healthier meals within the university community.

4) Demonstration programs on healthy food and vegetable production
The CCAS FARM operates as an organic agriculture learning and demonstration center, where students, teachers, and staff participate in hands-on training on organic vegetable and rice production, soil and input management, and safe agriculture practices. These activities function as demonstration programmes that show how to produce healthy, chemical-safe food and vegetables, integrating theory with practice.

5) Other innovative initiatives to promote a healthy diet
SWU also implements innovative healthy diet initiatives such as:

  • The “30-Baht Healthy Meal Initiative”, requiring food vendors to offer at least one complete healthy meal at 30 THB to ensure affordability and access to nutritious food for all students and staff.

  • A nutrition badge system in canteens that labels dishes with icons such as “More Vegetables,” “High Protein,” and “Low Fat/Low Oil,” along with educational boards explaining these badges to enhance nutrition literacy.

  • Periodic Healthy Canteen Weeks and SWU Well-being campaigns that promote healthy menus, encourage people to “order less sugar, less oil, less salt,” and engage student clubs in promoting sustainable and healthy diets on campus.

Taken together, these policies, programmes, and facilities demonstrate that SWU has a comprehensive healthy diet programme that addresses policy, education, food availability, demonstration of healthy production, and innovative nutrition-promotion initiatives.
